Distinguishing Features of Toy Haulers
When you’re on a weekend adventure, you sometimes want the use of a quad or powersports vehicle to explore those back roads. You don’t want to compromise on comfort and security while camping, though, and a toy hauler is your best bet when it comes to having a versatile and cozy living space combined with a spacious storage bay for your big cargo.
Definition
Toy haulers are not so much an entirely separate class of mobile home as they are a subset of other popular recreational vehicle styles. Fifth wheels and travel trailers can both be toy haulers. Fifth wheels can provide more stability with their gooseneck hitch that locks into the bed of a truck, but they require you to already own a half-ton pickup as a towing vehicle due to their size and their unique coupling system. Travel trailers, on the other hand, can be towed by most passenger vehicles and are more compact, but don’t hold as much weight as a fifth wheel. You can choose whichever style best meets your needs and matches your towing skills and the type of towing vehicle you already own.
Versatile Enclosed Garage
The most obvious difference between toy haulers and other kinds of RVs is that their empty rear interior is divided from the front living space. This cargo bay or garage is a secure, enclosed, easily-cleaned storage area capable of securely holding almost anything you can imagine.
While their primary intended purpose is for transporting utility vehicles, ATVs, quads, motorcycles, and other powersports vehicles, you can use the cargo bay of a toy hauler in several ways. The rear gated doors fold down in most models to form a ramp that lets you drive up your powersports vehicles, but it can also be used to haul in other cargo or furniture, or bulky items like bicycles and sporting equipment. If you leave it empty, you can open the gates and have a small playroom for the kids or a mobile porch for relaxing. Throw in a couch and a table and you’ve got extra space for entertaining. It’s up to you how you make use of the space, but it’s a valuable asset any way you look at it.
