RV Bathroom Maintenance Tips
Staying on top of RV maintenance can help prevent costly repairs that will take a lot of time to complete. One area that is often not given enough attention is your RV’s bathroom. Moisture build-up can cause mold or mildew, while failing to check on seals can cause leaks. Follow these tips so that you can keep your RV’s bathroom clean, sanitized, and mold-free.
Sanitizing & Deep-Cleaning The Bathroom
Bathrooms are a breeding ground for bacteria and other germs, so you’ll want to stay on top of cleaning and sanitizing. Again, be careful only to use products that are designed or certified as safe to use in an RV bathroom. Coatings and materials in these bathrooms are more fragile and lightweight than a typical bathroom, helping your fuel economy but requiring extra care.
Clean your bathroom at least once a week while traveling. Paper towels and a diluted bleach solution should be safe, along with glass cleaner or a vinegar/water spray mixture to clean the toilet, counter, mirror, and shower.
Check the Toilet Seal
Before you leave and after you return, make sure your toilet seal is intact and tight. This seal helps keep water in the RV toilet and prevents odors. If it hardens too much, it can crack and cause leakage. Plumber’s grease can help you reseal it, but significant wear might require a total replacement.
Preventing Mold & Mildew In Showers
Another of the best benefits of camping in an RV is the option for a nice hot shower at the end of your day’s adventures. Be careful to maintain the shower carefully to ensure you retain that option! Prevent soap and hard-water buildup on the shower head and walls by wiping them down after every shower, either with a squeegee or towels.
Make sure to empty your greywater tank to avoid it backing up into your shower drain. Deep-clean the shower after every RV trip and make sure all water drains fully to prevent mildew and mold.
