RV Maintenance Guide
Your RV provides you with all the comforts of home every time you take it on the road. Whether you’re a weekend warrior or an experienced traveler, you rely on your camper to work well and give you everything you need to enjoy your trip. However, your RV’s parts wear down or need to be replaced over a period of time, and several elements of your vehicle need to be checked and maintained regularly.
If you’re not sure where to start with RV maintenance, don’t worry! Just follow these tips to simplify your maintenance needs so you can focus on planning your next trip.
Read the Manual
Consult your owner’s manual to see what the manufacturer recommends for your specific make and model of RV. This could save you a lot of time and money by avoiding any damage to your camper. The owner’s manual will serve as your primary resource for everything that needs to be done. Keep a record of maintenance performed and parts replaced in your manual, too, as this will be helpful whenever you visit a professional mechanic or if you sell your rig down the road.
Inspect Your RV
Walk around the outside of your camper to check it from all angles for signs of damage. You’re looking for rust, dents, and grime that might necessitate a thorough cleaning, leaks, and water damage. Climb up onto the roof as well to inspect its condition. After a season of travel, it likely needs to be cleaned to keep debris and water from damaging it, in addition to checking for cracks or areas that might be causing a ceiling leak. You’ll also want to look at vents to see whether they need to be cleaned.
Check the Tires
Every vehicle needs to ride on good, rugged tires. Towing or driving an RV with worn-out tires or poor pressure is asking for a blowout on the highway, which is particularly dangerous given all the extra weight these vehicles carry.
Use a tire pressure gauge to get an accurate reading for all your camper’s tires, then inflate them up to the manufacturer’s recommended pressure level. While you’re checking the pressure, inspect the sidewalls for any cracks, and look at the tread to make sure it’s sufficiently deep and that there are no objects embedded in your tires.
